Hardfacing
Extends the Life of Construction Equipment Used for Building
Roads and Highways
Equipment
used for Construction and Earthmoving, such as graders, bulldozers, and
trenchers, foundation drilling augers and casings, asphalt and concrete
pavers, tunneling and boring equipment is exposed to a tremendous amount
of wear and tear and the use of Postalloy Hardfacing Alloys will
dramatically improve their wear life, and therefore, length of service.
Impact subjects the part to immediate and rapid crushing forces that
usually result in deformation and spalling of the metal surface.
Compression, which generally means that the force is applied for a longer
period of time, results in mostly abrasion. Grinding abrasion occurs
when abrasive particles are ground between two surfaces under pressure,
causing the abrasive particles to fracture and be crushed. These
increases wear rates by comparison with rounded abrasives. Gouging
abrasion is a combination of Impact and Abrasion and occurs on many
components. Alloys to resist wear and abrasion must be both
hard and tough, since in most cases, wear is caused by multiple factors.
Suggestions include chromium carbide and complex carbides. No
single procedure or hard surfacing overlay will solve all the problems.
